As measles cases continue to make headlines across the country, it’s important for families in the Denver area to stay informed and know what to look for. While measles was once considered eliminated in the U.S., a decline in vaccination rates has led to a resurgence in some communities.
At Integrative Pediatric Health Care (IPHC), we want to help parents protect their children through education, early detection, and access to care. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause serious complications, especially in young children. It spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and even lingering particles in the air. According to the CDC, 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to measles will become infected.
Symptoms of Measles: What to Watch For
Symptoms typically appear 7–14 days after exposure. Early signs often resemble a common cold, making early screening especially important. Look out for:
- High fever (often 104°F or higher)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- Tiny white spots (Koplik spots) inside the mouth
- Widespread rash that usually starts at the hairline and spreads downward
The rash typically appears 3–5 days after the first symptoms and may be accompanied by a spike in fever.
When to Call IPHC
If your child develops a high fever and any of the symptoms above—especially a rash or red eyes—please call IPHC before coming into the clinic. Measles is extremely contagious, and we take special precautions to protect all families in our care.
Our Nurse Practitioners are highly experienced in pediatric infectious disease screening and can guide you through the next steps, whether it’s testing, monitoring at home, or seeking emergency care.
How to Protect Your Family
The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is highly effective and typically given in two doses:
- The first at 12–15 months of age
- The second at 4–6 years old
If your child is behind on vaccinations, our providers can help create a catch-up schedule.
Why It Matters in Denver
Because Denver is a hub for travel and tourism, children in our community may be more likely to encounter visitors from areas where measles outbreaks are active. Staying current on vaccinations and being alert to symptoms helps keep our community safe.
