Summer break is here! While it’s a much-needed time for rest and fun, it can also bring the daily challenge of keeping your school-age kids entertained—without relying on screens. The good news? Summer is the perfect season to mix creativity, outdoor adventure, and hands-on learning in ways that don’t feel like “school.”
At Integrative Pediatric Health Care (IPHC), we know that nurturing healthy minds and bodies doesn’t stop when the school bell rings for the last time in June. These six simple, STEAM-infused activities will keep your children engaged, curious, and having a blast all summer long!
1. DIY Bubble Lab + Wand Crafting ![]()
Making your own bubbles is part science, part magic. Mix 6 cups of water, 1 cup of dish soap, and 1/4 cup of corn syrup for super strong bubbles. Then, create custom bubble wands using pipe cleaners, straws, or wire hangers shaped into stars, hearts, or spirals. Kids can test which wand shape makes the biggest or longest-lasting bubbles—bringing in a little physics without even realizing it! ![]()
2. Backyard Bug Safari ![]()
Turn your backyard or local park into a nature exploration zone. Supply your kids with magnifying glasses, bug jars, and a notebook for observations. They can track different species, draw what they see, and research fun facts.
This combines science, art, and storytelling—plus, it gets them moving and curious about the natural world.
3. Sidewalk Chalk City + STEM Challenges ![]()
Give your kids a box of sidewalk chalk and a mission: design a city, complete with roads, parks, and buildings. Then turn it into a challenge—can they create a bridge that spans two chalk “buildings” using just popsicle sticks and rubber bands? STEAM fun is all about experimenting, sometimes failing, and trying again.
4. Kitchen Chemistry Experiments
From making slime
to growing crystals with borax, the kitchen is full of exciting chemistry experiments. Try this crowd-pleaser: baking soda and vinegar volcanoes with added dish soap and food coloring. Safe, affordable, and a guaranteed wow-factor! ![]()
5. Shadow Art + Sun Science
Use toy animals, action figures, or natural objects like leaves and flowers to create shadow art. Place them on paper under the sun and trace the shadows at different times of day. Not only is it a creative activity, it also introduces kids to the science of how the
Earth rotates and how the sun’s position changes throughout the day. ![]()
6. DIY Water Wall ![]()
Using recyclables like plastic bottles, funnels, tubes, and measuring cups, create a water wall on a fence or balcony railing. Kids can experiment with gravity, volume, and water flow—plus cool off in the summer heat! This one is always a hit and encourages engineering thinking.
Summer is the perfect opportunity to keep kids active, curious, and joyful. At IPHC, we believe that learning and wellness go hand in hand. These screen-free ideas offer plenty of both—all wrapped up in fun!
Wishing your family a happy, healthy, and play-filled summer! ![]()
